Thermowell

Thermowell

A thermowell protects thermocouples, RTDs and temperature sensors from process pressure, flow, abrasion, corrosion and harsh media. It provides a closed-end protective pocket between the process and the sensing element. Also, it allows sensor removal or replacement without directly exposing the process line in suitable installations. As a result, users can improve sensor life, maintain process safety and support more reliable temperature measurement in demanding industrial applications.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Product

A thermowell is a closed-end protective tube used to house a temperature sensor such as a thermocouple or RTD. It helps protect the sensing element from process pressure, flow, corrosion, abrasion and harsh media.
A thermowell is used to protect the temperature sensor and provide a pressure-tight barrier between the process and the atmosphere. It can also help users remove or replace the sensor without directly exposing the process in suitable installations.
Common thermowell types include threaded, flanged, welded, socket weld, weld-in and Van Stone type constructions. The right type depends on pressure, temperature, process connection, velocity and maintenance requirement.
Thermowells can be made from stainless steel, Inconel, ceramic, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, tantalum, molybdenum and other materials depending on process temperature, corrosion, abrasion and media compatibility.
ASME PTC 19.3 thermowell analysis is used to review wake frequency and mechanical suitability of a thermowell under process flow conditions. It helps validate insertion length and design against vibration-related risk.
Coated thermowells are useful when the process has abrasion, corrosion, scaling, chemical attack or high-temperature wear. Coating options may include tungsten carbide, Stellite, PTFE, ceramic or zirconia depending on service condition.
Users should check process temperature, pressure, flow velocity, media composition, corrosion, abrasion, connection type, insertion length, response requirement and sensor type before selecting a thermowell.
